Welcome back to the College!

I am sure you have all had very rewarding experiences out there in the 'real world', even if they were not what you expected. Now that you are back and have a fresh idea of what you know, and perhaps more importantly, what you don't know, take some time to answer this survey prepared by our very own Aisha Mohammed from Year 3.

During the last week and a bit, I have had the pleasure of driving around the tri-emirate region visiting schools. From my own accounts, I have seen scenes of spectacular beauty.
Some of our classmates have also had great experiences ... so great that their students had to put on a show for us. Move your mouse over the picture.

Lately, we have been talking about teaching and leading. The focal point of these discussions have been YOU. If you want to lead, you have to know how to follow. If you want to teach, you have to know how to be a student. If you want to assess and judge others' work, as you will as a teacher, you have to be able to assess yourself.

Next week, you will all go out to the workplace to practice the future. While you may not actually have a chance to lead a team or a class, you will certainly be leading yourself.
Read this article on Emotional Intelligence and reflect on how you can become more aware of your own actions.
The following is excerpted from the article
What Is Emotional Intelligence?
People with a high degree of emotional intelligence usually know ... how their emotions can affect other people. There are five main elements of emotional intelligence:
- Self-awareness
- Self-regulation
- Motivation
- Empathy
- Social skills
Emotional Intelligence in Leadership
1. Self-awareness - Being self-aware when you're in a leadership position means having a clear picture of your strengths and weaknesses. And it means having humility.
- Keep a journal
2. Self-regulation - Leaders who regulate themselves effectively rarely verbally attack others, make rushed or emotional decisions, stereotype people, or compromise their values. This [shows] … commitment to personal accountability.
- Know your values
- Hold yourself accountable – If you tend to blame others when something goes wrong, stop.
3. Motivation - Self-motivated leaders consistently work toward their goals.
4. Empathy - Leaders with empathy have the ability to put themselves in someone else's situation.
5. Social skills - Leaders who do well in this ... set the example with their own behavior.
